Key Concepts of Contact Rugby
The Field
Played on a rectangular field, typically 100 meters in length and 70 meters in width, marked with try lines, in-goal areas, and a halfway line. The dimensions can vary based on local regulations and competition levels.
Team Composition
Each team fields 15, 10 or 7 players on the pitch, depending on format, including forwards and backs. Teams may have additional players on the bench for substitutions during the game.
The Objective
The goal is to score tries by carrying the ball over the opponent's try line and grounding it. The team with the most tries at the end of the match is declared the winner.
The Possession & Phases
Teams aim to maintain possession through phases of play, utilizing scrums, lineouts, and rucks. Possession can be contested through tackles, rucks, and mauls.
The Tackle
Tackling is a key aspect of contact rugby, allowing players to halt the progress of the ball carrier. After a tackle, the ball must be released, and play continues with a contest for possession.
Starting & Restarting Play
Play begins with a kick-off from the halfway line. After scoring, the game restarts with the opposing team kicking off from the center of the field. Other restarts include scrums and lineouts.
Game Duration
A standard contact rugby match consists of 40-minute halves for 15's, with a halftime break, offering a full and competitive playing experience. Duration varies for 7s and 10s format.
