Key Concepts of Touch Rugby
The Field
Standard size is 70m × 50m with try lines and in-goal areas. Fields can be adapted for local competitions or space constraints.
Team Composition
Up to 14 players per team, with 6 on field. Mixed games often require a set male-female player ratio.
The Objective
Score tries by grounding the ball on or over the opponent’s try line. The team with the most tries wins.
The Possession
A team has up to six touches before turnover. A touch occurs when a defender touches the ball carrier.
The Touch & Rollball
After a touch, play resumes with a rollball: the attacker places the ball on the ground and rolls it back with the foot.
Starting Play
Matches start (and restart after tries) with a tap at halfway. The attacking player taps the ball with the foot and initiates play.
Game Duration
Typically 2 × 20-minute halves with a short halftime. Formats can vary by competition.
